Penalties
There are four major categories of penalties:
1. Minor � 2 minute penalty.
2. Major � 5 minute penalty.
3. Misconduct � 10 minute penalty.
4. Game Misconduct, Gross Misconduct or Match Penalty � duration of the game.
Below are the referee calls and what penalty they signify:

![]() Interference Crossed arms stationary in front of the chest with fists closed. Called when impeding the progress of an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, deliberately knocking a stick out of an opponent’s hand or not, allowing an opponent to regain his equipment. |
![]() Cross Checking A forward and backward motion with fists extending from the chest. Called for hitting an opponent with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice. |
![]() Holding Grasping the wrists in front of the chest. Called for using the hands of an opponent or his equipment. |
![]() Elbowing Trapping the elbow with the opposite hands. Called for using the elbow to impede an opponent. |
![]() Hooking Tugging motion with arms, is called for using the stick or blade to hook an opponent. |
![]() Slashing Chopping with one hand across the opposite forearm. Called for swinging the stick at the opponent. |
![]() Washout Both arms swung out at shoulder level with palms down. When used by the linesman, it means no icing or offsides. |
![]() Tripping Strike the right leg with the right hand below the knee. Called for using the stick, an arm or leg to cause an opponent to trip or fall. |
![]() High Sticking Holding both fists clenched, one above the other, at the side of the head. Called for carrying the stick above the shoulder against the opponent. |
![]() Charging Rotating clenched fists in front of the chest. Called for taking more than three strides before checking an opponent. |
![]() Misconduct A 10 minute penalty usually called against a player who becomes excessively abusive in language. The team may use a substitute for the penalized player. |
